This week the prompt for #100WC is a photo. Here is mine…

“This is the last one that I am allowed to give you.” Steve declared in his high-pitched little voice. I met Steve, whilst I was walking through the mystical forest not far from my house. He is a little, elf like creature with potions and powers unknown to the human race. He has big pointy ears, like all good elves do. Steve has blue eyes as deep as the ocean. He is smart and funny. His uniform is a big jumpsuit with blue and white stripes. The potions that he gives me can be harmful and helpful. “Don’t just give this to anyone, it is powerful.” He says, “Be careful.

Hi,

This week is the second last Student Blogging Challenge. The “theme” for this week is… Using Language.

CHALLENGE ONE: is to watch the video Dove Evolution and explain what we learnt. Although I was unable to embed this video, so I found one that was similar. Here it is, take a look:

We are learning about something similar to this in PDH this term. What have you learnt from this video? Something that I have definitely learnt is that everyone is pretty in there own way. We are all different and we are all beautiful. There is no definition of beauty because beauty comes from the inside as well. I also learnt that all of that “gorgeous” “hot” “pretty” models are all fake.

CHALLENGE 2:

Create the following to embed on your blog:

a comic strip related to internet safety

a Voki trying to persuade listeners to read a particular book

a collage about social values such as co-operation, sharing etc

My collage here shows courage, independence, team work, sharing, co-operation, kindness and teamwork.

CHALLENGE 3:

Write a book, film or game review. Remember to rate it out of 10 and mention what age group you would recommend it for.

Recently, I saw the movie She’s The Man, with my best friend Jess. It was perfect for a sleepover. It is hilarious, clever and creative. The movie is about a girl who is passionate about soccer. Although her team at school gets cut, because not enough people sign up. She wants to go on the boys team although they won’t let her. So, she dresses up as a boy and attends her brothers school, whilst he is in London. There parents are divorced so they think that the children are at each others places. She has many problems along the way, including an awkward love triangle. I would recommend this movie for ages 12+. I would have to rate it 9/10 as it is one of my favourites!

CHALLENGE 4:

Write a recount, explanation, persuasive piece of writing. Find an image relating to it and remember to add correct attribution. I did this in an assessment task.

Television Advertisements Should Be Banned

By Emily

Sitting on the couch, enjoying your favourite television program by yourself, with friends or family and an advertisement comes in, in the most annoying time possible. Today, I will be writing to inform you about why television advertisements should be banned and why they should not. My first point for the affirmative side is that the advertisements cost an enormous amount of money that should be going to more worthwhile causes, such as health, education and transport. My first point for the negative side is that the television advertising industry is a huge industry and banning these advertisements would leave 27,000 people unemployed. My second point for the negative team is that without television advertisements we undoubtedly will get more junk emails/spam, more advertising calls and more junk mail in letterboxes.

Firstly, the amount of money that is wasted on television advertising is astonishing and could be going to a much more worthwhile cause. Did you know that it costs $10,000 to put ten seconds of an advertisement on Channel 7 at prime time? Wasting so much money on an advertisement is ridiculous. This money could be going to a much more worthwhile cause. Recently the Government has made a massive subtraction of money from the educational system. Out of the thirty ads that are played in one television program, this money could go such a long way. This money could lead to one more child getting the education that they need. By banning the advertisements on television you could be giving one more child the education that they need and deserve. Not only is the educational system in need, so is the health system and public transport. Our money could also go to charities such as Red Cross, St Vinnie’s or World Vision. Recently, Prime Minister Gillard made an advertisement for the carbon tax. For this add, fake kitchens were made with the value of $10,000. Those kitchens are now sitting in a warehouse not being used at all. This was revealed on The Project, last night on Channel 10. The amount of money that is being wasted on advertising is utterly ridiculous when there are many other possibilities to get your business on the right track.

My first point for the negative side is that the advertising business is a massive industry. If advertisements on television are band then thousands of people are definitely going to lose their jobs. ABC has revealed that there are roughly 27,000 people working in the television advertising business. At this time in our lives, it is a terrible time to be unemployed. In the past year 5100 jobs have been cut, do we really need anymore? By watching that television advertisement for thirty seconds you are feeding someone’s family. Those adds have gone a long way, casting, lighting, artists, safety monitors, assistants producing and building, there are so many more! All of these businesses would be getting unemployed if those jobs were cut. Surely we can watch some advertisements and not be so selfish.

Furthermore, without television advertisements we will get more spam/junk email, calls and junk mail. Watching a thirty second add surely isn’t as bad as being interrupted in the middle of dinner to be offered a free “Foxtel Installation”. It isn’t as bad as getting a virus from opening an advertising email on your computer. It isn’t as bad as getting junk mail in your letterbox. ABC has proven that $1 billion of junk mail is thrown out every year. A short add interrupting your television program is undoubtedly better than being interrupted when you’re busy or enjoying a special moment. It is unquestionably better than ruining your computer from a virus sent from one laptop to the other. And it indisputably is better than wasting $1 billion dollars of paper, trees and oxygen.

In conclusion, I think that television advertisements should not be banned. Because it is a huge industry and without those thirty second advertisements on television, 27000 people wouldn’t have a job and also we would get more advertising from other forms such as junk mail, spam emails and calls.

CHALLENGE 5:

Create an A-Z dictionary relating to English – this could be done as a class using voicethread with a different group of letters on each slide. It could be added to throughout the year as students learn more vocabulary relating to English.

B: Brainstorm

C: Conjunction

D: Define

E: Essay

F: Full Stop

Hi Everyone,

Recently I got a comment fro Mrs Caudill’s Classroom! I had written about how my favourite sport was netball. But, there was a problem! Most Americans don’t know what netball is, so I am here to explain. Here is a post written from my friend Angie. You can visit her blog HERE. She clearly explains what netball is. Make sure you comment on her blog!

What is netball?

Netball is a sport kind of like basketball except you are not allowed to: run with the ball, get too close to the opposing player and there is no back board on the goals in which you can shoot easily. Netball is a sport where you use multiple skills to pass down the court and try to get a goal. If you get very close to a person, you are pulled out for obstruction and must stand beside the player. You cannot grab the ball or smack the ball out of the person’s hands like you can do in basketball, and there are different positions in a netball game.

Now here are the rules and positions in a Netball game;

The positions you can play in netball are: GA (goal attack) GD (goal defence) C (centre) WD (wing defence) WA (wing attack) GS (goal shooter) and GK (goal keeper) this is a picture of a netball court with the positions on it.

The number of people allowed on one netball team is 12 or under, but the number of people allowed on a netball court playing a game is 7. My team has 9 people in it, so that means when we play a game, 2 people will have to sit down and watch the game until they get called to swap with someone.

Hi Everyone,

On 11.11.12 (Yesterday) it was Remembrance Day. This day is a very special day for all Australian citizens. It is a day, when we remember all of the brave people that went to War, to fight for our country. We remember the people that are still at war fighting to help other countries and we remember family and friends that have lost loved ones.

At 11:00, we pause for a minute of silence. In this time, you can pray, and thank God for these brave people that fought for our country. You can remember what happened and think about what you could do to make our country better. You could also just remember all of the great people that died fighting for you and me.

As Australian Citizens we are so lucky for the brave soldiers that went to war. We now live in a safe country where we are free to have a voice and do what you believe in. In other countries that aren’t so fortunate they can get into trouble for praying to the god they believe in. Sometimes they can be killed for this. We are so lucky that we have brave soldiers that fought for us. We can also remember the nurses that went to War and are still at war. These nurses are the people that helped everyone when sick and injured.

Something else that we do, in a manner of respect, is to fly the Australian flag at half mast. This is a sign of respect and remembrance. Parliament House, The Sydney Harbour Bridge and The Australian War Memorial are just some important places that do this.

You can also say the Ode Of Remembrance. Here it goes…

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

This day is very, very special to all Australians, although it is especially special to others. This day is special to me because my Great Uncle and Great Grandfather was sent to World War 2. This is a day when we can remember them and what they did. Recently, my great Uncle passed away, although his funeral was special. He left in pride of his country and himself. His coffin had the Australian Flag hung over the top and the Australian National Anthem was played. Hundreds of thousands of Australians went to War and are still at war. They do great things for us.

Lastly, this is a very special poem that many people read or say on Remembrance Day. It is called In Flanders Fields.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae (1872–1918)

This is a photo of Australians celebrating in Martin Place that the war was over.

Grandparents are important because they can spoil you, care for you and love you. Grandparents are all known for spoiling you rotten. My grandparents especially! Every time we go to visit Nana and Pa, Nana has always found a new biscuit that we might enjoy and she has always gone out and brought treats for us, especially Pub Squash! Grandparents care for you and sometimes you have to care for them. When we go out, I usually have to plod along with my Nana who has a bit of trouble walking. But I don’t mind because she always cares for me. Grandparents are incredible, and certainly give the best hugs!

Why do you think Grandparents are important?

Hi Everyone,

This week again I am taking part in the 100 Word Challenge. The prompt for this week is All I could see were to red eyes. Here is mine…

I awoke suddenly and felt a trickle of sweat drip down my forehead like rain does to a window on a wet winters day. I heard footsteps plod along the cold wooden floor like death was awaiting me. My body started to shake and shiver uncontrollably. I heard deep, deep breathing as if something had gone wrong. The old wooden door creaked open slowly in the darkness. All I could see were too red eyes. I felt a sharp pain as if I had been struck by lightning. The force made me lie down. My head started hurting. All I saw then, was pure blackness.

How would you finish that?

Dawso
